The Impact of Contemporary HR Practices: Providing security to employees (Job Security)

Providing security to employees

Employment security is the first human resources best practice. Work is a constant aspect that is highly significant to most individuals, while life is unpredictable. In essence, the primary motivation for going to work is to have a job that allows the person to support their family and themselves. Employees who feel secure in their positions feel valued, which shouldn't come as a surprise. Employees feel respected as people first, then as employees, if an employer can instill a sense of security.

Between the employee and the employer, there is both a formal contract (work for money) and an informal contract (you put in a little more effort, we take care of you). Those who have stable employment can go home after work and take care of their family. Security is a key notion that guides practically all HR activities (Vulpen, 2022).

When this job security is in jeopardy, as when there is a restructure or a layoff, for instance, you quickly notice this throughout the organization.

Organizations also profit from employment security since it aids in employee retention. For instance, when employees are let go, the company is typically the one who suffers. They have contributed to the hiring, education, and professional growth of these staff members. It costs money to do this. People are more likely to leave the company and join the competition if it doesn't work to keep them (Vulpen, 2022).

Job Security

According to Vulpen (2022) A survey conducted in 2020 revealed that job security is the third most significant consideration for employees. In a UK survey of 1,100 professionals, 28% said that job stability was a key consideration. Job security is crucial to all international HRM approaches.

What does Job Security Means?

Ans: The belief that workers will be able to keep their jobs for as long as they can predict. It is also the assurance that staff members feel that, even in the event of a financial catastrophe, they would continue to have a secure employment.

Job security during pandemic:

The article written by Gentle (2020) Salary (73.8%), location (66.9%), and job stability (27.7%) are the three most crucial elements that professionals are currently searching for in a new job, according to a recent poll by the UK's top independent job portal, CV-Library.

In the study, 1,100 UK professionals were questioned. "Job security was favored the most by 55-64 year old's (35.9%), followed by 45-54 year old's (30.7%) and 35-44 year old's (24.3%)." (Onrec et al., 2020).

Job security and job stability; key differences

While the phrases may be used interchangeably, job or career stability refers to how long a worker may stay in their current position before needing to leave it or look for new employment alternatives. Even this, though, is changing as a result of the fact that workers are now looking for flexible and mobile career options that allow them to apply their skills to a variety of positions.

Job security, on the other hand, is the assurance that person feels upon accepting a position that they won't be going without it eventually. For the majority of people, having a stable employment is crucial since job insecurity has a detrimental effect on mental health.

Why do managers and employees value job security?

A sense of employment stability and successful contribution to the expansion of the company will be felt by employees who feel safe in their work environments. For workers to feel satisfied at work and to have the necessary mental stability to preserve their positions, job security is crucial. Managers may be certain that excellent work will be produced and that organizational goals will be met more quickly when employees are productive and in good mental health.

According to a study, workers who have the backing of their managers will actively support the goals of the company. This is because they feel appreciated and can see themselves growing with the business. When workers feel uneasy, managers may have a hard time motivating them and may even run into a brick wall. Such workers will just perform the minimal minimum duties while on the job (CoachHub, 2022).

Conclusion

An employee's need to stay on the job and advance in their careers, certain boundaries are important to put in place. Both companies and employees must understand when seeking job stability turns toxic. Companies need to understand that workers are first and foremost people with lives to live, families to care for, and personal objectives and aspirations to pursue. In an effort to guarantee job security, none of this should be put at risk. Low job productivity could arise from mental stress, burnout, and depression.

Workers who want job stability shouldn't forgo other crucial things, such as their feeling of purpose, in favor of hazardous working conditions. When work demands become poisonous, you must be able to recognize it.

  5. Hi Janaka, as an employee I completely agree with the importance of job security. As stated in a study by SHRM, job security is one of the primary factors that employees consider when assessing job opportunities (Daley, 2022). Having job security is crucial for employee satisfaction and overall well-being. It's challenging to focus on work when there is a constant worry of losing the job or experiencing a reduction in work hours. Companies that prioritize job security reap benefits in terms of profits, when employees feel secure, they tend to be more productive, engaged, and motivated to go above and beyond for their employer. Therefore, investing in job security can be a mutually beneficial for both the employer and employee.
